An Introduction to Shodo at Michigan Central

I had the honor of teaching an introductory shodo class in the great hall of Detroit's restored 1913 train station. Each student chose a word of personal meaning, such as 花 (flower), 安 (peace), 勝 (victory), 抹茶 (matcha), or 空白 (blank space), and brushed it by hand. The day's work was then laid out on the table for all to see.

Blacksmithing

At the forge, alongside working smiths

Moving hot steel

Days at the forge spent learning to draw out, twist, and shape bar stock by hammer and heat. The instinct is the same as in silversmithing, applied at the scale of glowing iron.

Pure Sky Creations was established on 1/10/2025 as a home for my creative practice. It has been an unexpected journey, one of exploring different mediums and discovering creative energies I had not known I possessed.

Born in California and raised in Asia, I developed an aesthetic sense that crosses borders and cultures, and Pure Sky Creations is my means of expressing it.

Thank you for taking the time to view my work.

02 · Martial Arts

The discipline of the body.

: the harmonious balance of the pen and the sword.

A Japanese philosophical concept: the same discipline that guides the brush guides the body. A parallel practice, trained with the same attention to form, patience, and intention as the work made by hand.

Accurate Full State Estimation of a Ballbot Using Optical Flow Sensors

Optical flow sensors were investigated as a direct alternative to motor encoders for measuring ball speed on PURE, a ballbot mobility device developed in the Human Dynamics and Controls Lab. I characterized two off-the-shelf sensors, then designed and iterated a bench-top testbed with a laser-cut wheel and an absolute encoder as ground truth. Findings were presented at the ISUR symposium, with support from ISUR and Siemens.

Lab Automation Robotic Arm: A System Concept

A system concept, not a built system, for automating repetitive pipetting and sample handling in a genetics research lab. The team took the design from stakeholder needs through requirements, architecture selection, and verification planning. Each decision traces back to the stakeholder.

  • Stakeholder analysis. Built a persona, a senior research scientist, and captured her pain points: human error, physical strain, lost staff hours, and budget pressure.
  • Needs → requirements. Grouped her needs into six top-level categories, then decomposed them into 23 system requirements with quantified targets such as ±0.1 mm placement accuracy and a noise limit of 60 dB or less.
  • Measures of effectiveness. Paired each need with a measurable MOE and a justification, including staff hours saved, errors per 100 tasks, sound level, and system weight.
  • Trade study. Compared five architectures: a liquid-handling workstation, a pneumatic pick-and-place system, a high-throughput screening system, manual labor, and a robotic arm. Only the arm covered both required functions, pick-and-place and pipetting, at low cost and complexity.
  • Subsystem partitioning. Divided the arm into power management, manipulator, embedded controller, and physical structure subsystems, each with a clear responsibility and clear interfaces.
  • Verification planning. Planned to verify functional requirements through prototypes and simulation, and non-functional requirements through subsystem analysis. For example, summed the estimated noise of each subsystem to confirm the total stays under 60 dB.

DFMEA for Automotive Vehicle Network Power Management Specifications

Power management specifications define how dozens of ECUs wake and sleep across shared vehicle networks. A single defect, such as a missing activator role or a wrong wake-mask bit, could pass unnoticed into ECU configuration, firmware, and test plans until hardware-in-the-loop testing, where it is costly to fix. Leading the DFMEA, I applied the AIAG-VDA 2019 method to find where these defects start and moved their detection to the point where the specification is written.

01 · DFMEA

  • Ran the seven-step AIAG-VDA process, calibrated to the company's Software DFMEA guidelines and reviewed by senior power management and safety engineers.
  • Broke specification content into four categories: ECU roles, NM PDU bit assignments, wake masks, and activation criteria.
  • Identified and rated 14 failure modes, 6 of them HIGH priority by RPN.

02 · Detect at Authoring

  • Built six automated pre-commit validators, one for each HIGH failure mode. A change that breaks a rule cannot be merged.
  • The checks cut each mode's RPN by 50–67%. They went live in June 2026 and have already caught defects in routine updates.

03 · Cross-Validate

  • Compared the specification against the deployed AUTOSAR ARXML configuration files and flagged ECU-network pairs where spec changes had not reached the build.
  • A new wake-mask validator checked 157 ECUs and found 2 with missing bits. Both were corrected, and the validator then passed on all 157.

04 · Trace End to End

  • Building a traceability index that links each requirement to its responsible system function, its software interface, and the test that validates it.
  • Requirements with no implementation reference are flagged as implementation debt, and those with no test are flagged as coverage gaps.

Improving SDV2 Power Management Specifications

The GB-5280 Partial Network specification was difficult to read, test, and trace. This caused friction between architects and test engineers, and added cost through repeated clarification cycles. The project measured the problem, redesigned the specification format, and verified the improvement with the people who use it.

01 · Define & Measure

  • Conducted a Voice of Customer survey across the specification consumer community.
  • Baseline scores for GB-5280 established quantified targets: testability 5.82 / 10 and traceability 5.64 / 10.

02 · Analyze

Four specification format concepts were evaluated against the survey findings:

  • Pseudocode
  • Graphics
  • Excel
  • Gherkin / BDD feature files

03 · Improve

  • Gherkin syntax for behavioral requirement language, readable by architects and directly testable.
  • Excel for the activation criteria sheet (SDV-8280A).
  • Word with supporting diagrams for foundational Partial Network content (SDV-8280).

04 · Control

The split specification architecture is now the standard for the power management team.

Requirements & Verification for an Autonomous Tracking System

The scenario was a startup building a safety-critical autonomous outdoor system, with a customer demo in six weeks. The team was strong, but system-level requirements and verification were loose. Tracking was lost after vibration or occlusion, calibration took about 25 minutes with a senior engineer, logs were inconsistent, and ownership between teams was unclear. The brief asked for judgment and prioritization over completeness.

DiagnosticLogs include timestamps, metadata, system state, and sensor dataSoftwareObservation

Verification plan

  • Scenario 1: Tracking. A Gazebo simulation with targets of varied size, distance, and acceleration, plus cover and debris to force reacquisition. This is followed by a physical test bench to capture friction, heat, and degradation that simulation misses.
  • Scenario 2: Reliability. A design review of structural natural frequencies, then a vibration test harness run to failure to begin tracking MTBF.
  • One extended tracking run doubles as the 5-hour endurance test.

Gaps, risks & assumptions

  • Gaps: interface control documents for shared requirements, subsystem decomposition, and safety requirements.
  • Risks: performance targets may be too strict, real-world use cases may not be covered, and failure modes are not yet addressed.
  • Assumptions: values are estimates to be refined with stakeholders; operator skill and training are still unknown.

First week

  • Centralize systems engineering documentation and link all tracked engineering work to a system-level requirement.
  • Hold an alignment session with the mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and test leads. The session would confirm current compliance, negotiate requirements, and pressure-test the six-week timeline.

Deliberately not formalized yet

  • The full calibration sequence depends on operator interfaces and final use cases.
  • Heavy process documentation is deferred: systems engineering should bring clarity, not paperwork.
  • Tracking decomposition and failure modes depend on solution choices, such as the sensor selection.
